Science
“At Chestnuts we aim to instill a love of Science and a sense of wonder at the world around us. Every child will begin to ask scientific questions about how things work and why. This questioning will act as a starting point for their learning. As part of the new curriculum, children will carry out practical investigations to answer scientific questions and will be expected think about how their findings link into what they already know about the world.”
At Chestnuts Primary School we believe that Science offers a structured approach to children’s learning. By providing contexts for stimulating and encouraging a child’s natural curiosity to understand and explore the world, we help children to develop their thinking skills.
We use Developing Experts as a basis for our Science Curriculum which aims to inspire pupils to become analytical and reflective thinkers who question the world around them. Curiosity and deeper thinking are at the heart of our approach, and we aim to equip pupils with the disciplinary skills and substantive knowledge to think like scientists.
The curriculum purposefully embeds careers into lessons, helping pupils see how their learning connects to real-world contexts. From the earliest years, pupils encounter a wide range of science professionals and learn how scientific understanding contributes to solving global challenges.
Pupils develop a foundation of scientific understanding through practical, enquiry-based learning. They build working scientifically skills, including observing, classifying, testing, predicting, measuring and evaluating. Lessons balance substantive content with opportunities for hands-on investigation, open-ended questioning and application to everyday scenarios.
Lessons are coherently sequenced to ensure progression across year groups, enabling pupils to build and retain knowledge over time. Recap prompts, AfL questions and topic threads are embedded throughout, ensuring continuity and reinforcement. Each lesson includes a full set of teaching resources: presentations, plans, quizzes, handouts, videos and knowledge organisers.
Cross-curricular links to literacy, Maths, art, design and technology and other subjects are included where appropriate and helpful.
